CERTH – Information Technologies Institute, Centre for Research & Technology Hellas

The Centre for Research and Technology-Hellas (CERTH), founded in 2000, is the only research centre in Northern Greece and one of the largest in the country. CERTH has important scientific and technological achievements in many areas including: Energy, Environment, Industry, Mechatronics, Information & Communication, Transportation & Sustainable Mobility, Health, Agro-biotechnology, Smart farming, Safety & Security, as well as several cross-disciplinary scientific areas. Today CERTH consists of the following five institutes: (a) Chemical Process & Energy Resources Institute (CPERI), (b) Information Technologies Institute (ITI), (c) Hellenic Institute of Transport (HIT), (d) Institute of Applied Biosciences (INAB), and (e) Institute of Bio- Economy and Agri-Technology (iBO). In AIDEAS, CERTH participates through ITI.

CERTH is essentially a self-supported Research Centre generating an average annual turnover of ~25M€ coming from: (a) >30% from bilateral industrial research contracts, (b) >60% from competitive research projects, (c) <10% as government institutional funding. More than 700 people work at CERTH with the majority being scientists. CERTH has received numerous awards and distinctions such as the European Descartes Prize, the European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant, Microsoft International Contest Prize, the Trading Agents Competition Award and many more. In addition, CERTH is listed among the Top-12 of the EU’s Research Institutions with the highest participation in H2020 competitive research grants and is currently among the leading organisations in Greece in securing H2020 funding. CERTH has participated successfully in more than 1200 competitive research projects (with a total budget exceeding 450M€ and involving more than 1100 international partner organizations) financed by the EU, leading industries from USA, Japan and Europe, and the Greek Government via the General Secretariat of Research and Technology (GSRT). CERTH’s research results (more than 350 publications per year) have significant scientific impact (about 7100 heterocitations/year). Four spin off companies have been already launched through CERTH’s research activities.

THE ROLE OF CERTH IN AIDEAS PROJECT:

The Information Technologies Institute (ITI), as a part of Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH), is one of the leading Institutions of Greece in the fields of Informatics, Telematics and Telecommunications. ITI’s research teams have shown remarkable scientific work through a number of publications including scientific publications in international journals, publications in conferences, books and book chapters. M4D, operating within MKLab as one of ITI’s laboratories, is the entity participating in AIDEAS Project.

M4D develops cutting-edge research algorithms and novel solutions in the areas of Multimodal data Fusion, Web data Mining, Big data, Multimedia Understanding, Artificial Intelligence and Multimodal analytics for Arts & Media, Security, Health, Earth Observation, Smart Manufacturing and Migration domains. In AIDEAS, M4D is the Project Coordinator, bearing the role and responsibility of coordinating the implementation of the project’s actions, both on technical and administrative level.

Moreover, M4D is leading the development of the machine passport and will support the development of data communication protocols, standards, and interfaces for smart trustful data storing, sharing and exchange between different AIDEAS Suites. M4D is responsible for providing real-time large-scale knowledge management algorithms that exploit robust and explainable AI techniques to provide the rationale for any derived decision making process, to apply early analysis on manufacturing data aiming to discover critical latent insights about the entire machine life cycle, and to reveal causal relationships among data variables.
